Food is an important part of our bicycle tours. We know that a 150-pound cyclist can easily burn 800 calories per hour of cycling. To successfully complete a multi-day tour, cyclists must fuel themselves appropriately at breakfast, take in adequate calories at regular intervals while on the bike, and then recover with meals designed to replenish glycogen stores and repair muscle.
We rely primarily on catered meals prepared by professionals on all of our tours. These professionals are familiar with sanitation procedures and health laws, and know how to prepare meals for large groups of very hungry people. If we are staying at an Indiana State Park with an inn, we use the inn staff and/or facilities to cater our meals. At parks without an inn, we bring in a mobile caterer. In each case, we work with the caterers to set menus that offer a variety of healthy entrees and sides, with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Vegetarian options are available at every meal, and diabetic dietary needs are also taken into consideration.
Our meals are also fun. They are a time for our participants to get to know one another, perhaps try a regional dish new to them, or splurge on a piping hot piece of apple pie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream if they choose.
